Artificial intelligence (AI) has been proven to be an essential engine of green economic development, yet how it will affect the internal structure of the green economy is unknown. Recent AI advancements have unveiled transformative prospects and opportunities to enhance and optimize environmental performance and efficiency. These strides have, in turn, impacted smart eco-cities, catalyzing ongoing improvements and driving solutions to address complex environmental challenges.

Human-caused climate change has dominated global trends: The last eight years have been the hottest on record. A sure-to-be-record-hot 2023 and a potentially even hotter 2024 would stretch that streak to a decade [1].

As a year of surprising global warming ended, a record-high annual average temperature was assured. Now, some scientists are already speculating that 2024 could be even hotter. World Environment Day this year will be on the 5th of June. The 2024 Day focuses on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.

The latest evidence shows that current climate changes are primarily attributable to greenhouse gas emissions from human industrial activity. Exceeding 1.5°C of warming above preindustrial levels is projected to increase extreme weather events, increase rates of heat-related morbidity and mortality and vector-borne disease, exacerbate food and water insecurity, harm biodiversity and agriculture, displace communities, and disproportionately impact disadvantaged groups [2].

AI systems will form inevitable parts of our cognitive and affective scaffolding. The robust AI systems can and should be genuine partners in our fights to avert the disastrous consequences of global warming. To escape climate apathy collectively, we need our best AI systems in this fight. The power of most AI systems can and should be harnessed to support a symbiotic coexistence of the three interconnected spheres: the ecosystem, human society, and the AI-powered infosphere. [3]

Happy New Year to all our readers
